Our aim is to provide Prevention Services that empower and encourage the community and its members towards a path of healing and hope

Wabaseemoong Child Welfare Authority’s (Wabishki Makinaakoons Abinoojii Niwiidabimaa) Prevention Services is a department that operates with a strong foundation in Anishinaabe traditions, customs, and culture.

Our programs are designed to address the needs of the community and its members through various initiatives falling under 3 main categories. The first category focuses on promoting healthy community/family interactions and activities. This involves organizing seasonal activities, social events, recreational activities, and field trips that foster community bonding and strengthen family relationships.

Building A Resilient Community

We strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment where individuals and families can access a range of services and resources that promote healing, growth, and well-being. Through Prevention Services, we work towards building a resilient community that can overcome challenges and embrace a future filled with hope.

In addition, we also focus on Wiisokaywin, which is centered around community support and response. This includes networking with other community services and resources to ensure a holistic approach towards supporting community members. Our team engages in community support through home visits, providing transportation, after-hour responses, case conferencing, and emergency assistance. We also offer office support, which includes services such as letter writing, referrals, counselling, advocacy, and repatriation for individuals in need.

Overall, our approach is rooted in cultural values and traditions, recognizing the importance of community and family in the healing process.

The Prevention Services team provides a three-tiered approach:

  • Primary Services: educational workshops, children/youth and community activities that encourage working together
  • Secondary Services: one-to-one and family support/counselling, group activities for parents
  • Tertiary Services: crisis support services, referrals & advocacy, resource coordination
