March 25, 2024 — In a bid to strengthen emergency response capabilities, Ma’iingan Services (of WCWA) recently concluded a comprehensive Ice Rescue Technician training program from March 20-22 in Kenora, ON. The three-day course, attended by nine dedicated members of Ma’iingan, aimed to equip the team with essential skills and knowledge crucial for handling ice rescue situations effectively in the community of Wabaseemoong.

Justin Cederwall, Director of Ma’iingan, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It feels good to be able to provide such a service at a high level for Wabaseemoong.” This sentiment displays the commitment of Ma’iingan Services to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community members they serve.

The practical aspect of the training reached its pinnacle on the final day when the nine Ma’iingan members ventured to the Discovery Centre building, suited up and began rescue drills. Despite bone-chilling temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius, they bravely immersed themselves in the frigid waters, demonstrating their commitment and proficiency in learning rescue techniques. Their completion of the Ice Rescue Technician training marks a significant step forward in enhancing community safety and emergency response capabilities.

Lena Jamieson, Services Manager, highlighted the significance of the training outcome, stating, “My team and myself now understand what to expect in an ice rescue situation allowing us to respond effectively to emergencies, particularly in cold water environments.  Our team will be ready if needed.

Ma’iingan Services operates as a response team under Wabaseemoong Child Welfare Authority, providing round-the-clock support in both Wabaseemoong Independent Nations and Kenora, ON.
