Celebrating a milestone in Caring for Our Children, Youth & Families
Wabaseemoong Independent Nations and W is thrilled to announce the Grand Opening of Wabishki Makinakoons Abinoojii Niiwidibimaa (Family Services) new building, marking a monumental milestone in the wake of the historic Coordination Agreement signed in March 2022. The agreement solidified Wabaseemoong Independent Nations’ jurisdiction over child and family services, empowering the First Nation to make decisions in the best interests of its children, families, and communities. This coordination agreement builds upon Wabaseemoong’s Customary Care Code, which has held the force of federal law since January 8, 2021.
The Grand Opening represents another moment of celebration and resilience for Wabaseemoong and its members. It signifies the First Nation’s ability to exercise its jurisdiction and self-determination in the realm of child and family services. In the shape of a large turtle, the Wabishki Makinakoons Abinoojii Niiwidibimaa’s new building embodies the spirit and commitment to ensuring that Wabaseemoong children and youth remain connected to their families, culture, and community.
The grand opening will take place on November 14 with a Ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a Children’s and Family Powwow and a firework drone show by Arch Angels on November 15. Please join us in celebrating this moment for our community.
